06 Feb Please park well and clear your garbage
You have this early morning meeting on Thursday and you got out on time, facing your route, minding your business and being confident about how the day will play out. Suddenly you meet an unwholesome traffic jam and you can visibly see the cause of the traffic up front, garbage truck: Happened to me.
A lot of times you get on the road and discover that these garbage carrying trucks have totally no respect for traffic rules and laws and park right in the middle of the road while they wait for people to come out of their places to drop their refuse. That is not even mentioning the unhealthy smell and the trail of unpacked debris they always leave behind.
I do not think it would take a lot of effort for them to park the truck properly and collect the refuse. Took me over twenty minutes to move beyond the truck, with the strong smell too; twenty minutes I did not budget for.
I believe it is possible to eradicate this problem as it is fast becoming a habit. Garbage trucks regularly do not stop in a position to allow other road users get through easily and this creates a backlog of traffic that normally takes a long time to clear and definitely wastes people’s time and fuel. Proper training should be done for these truck drivers to ensure they do not constitute a nuisance on our roads, and they should ensure that whichever Garbage disposal company violates the road use rules or have its activities impeding free flow of traffic, should be held accountable.
The roads belong to everybody, let us all allow the next person have a hitch free ride.
