Truck Breakdown: Wrecking Ikorodu Road

A view of Ikorodu road (Idiroko to Obanikoro) few days back.

To everything there is a season: a time to be born and a time to die; a time to manufacture, and a time to break down!

The drive time between Maryland and Fadeyi part of Ikorodu Road is usually 3 minutes or less during rush hour as you are always opposing traffic. But Tuesday to Saturday last week was different. The average drive time during on these days was 45 minutes.

“Why?” You may exclaim! Truck breakdown. And yes, LASTMA officials would stand by directing traffic while the vehicles are being repaired on the spot.

You will recall that on our Q1 2013 and Q3 2013 reports, this issue accounts for about 8% of the major cause of traffic in Lagos as reported via Tsaboin TrafficTalk. Howbeit not the major cause of traffic, but this is highly avoidable.

Vehicle Inspection Officers seems to be more concerned about private vehicles leaving out focus on these “road unworthy” trucks.

My recommendations would be that these vehicles should be impounded by FRSC when spotted, while LASTMA should have their tow trucks around to immediately move broken down trucks out of the express-way before it can constitute any nuisance. Long stretch of traffic can build up within 5 minutes, talk less of the whole repair period.

Finally, truck owners, please put your vehicles on scheduled maintenance to avoid truck breakdown that lead to loss of time, value, money and quality of lives of other people.
